Unarmed Civilian Protectors

Dr. Ann Frisch served as a trained, unarmed civilian protector (UCP)

in Guatemala when Nonviolent Peaceforce sent a team to protect threatened women human rights defenders during the national elections in 2007.  Currently she serves the organization as Senior Adviser.  She is co-author and certified trainer for the first e-learning curriculum for Unarmed Civilian Peacekeepers in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). In 2017, she was named Rotary International Peace Champion in Geneva Rotary UN meeting, along with 5 others,  for her work with Nonviolent Peaceforce and Rotary.   With the Khuanlang-Hatyai Rotary Club she organized the first district grant to be used in an area of armed conflict (Southern Thailand) and the first ever to train Rotarians in “educational and humanitarian” service with district grants.  In 2016, following the RI Convention in Seoul, she trained activists for reunification in the DMZ.   In May 2022, her Rotary grant to Nonviolent Peaceforce trained 40 Rotarians and Nigeria National Park Rangers (both women and men) to use the methods of unarmed civilian protectors instead of guns in dealing with local conflict on public lands. 

Currently Ann is a member of the WE Rotary Club of International Peace (D5000She has worked with other Rotarians to create a Rotarians for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons, which is working to educate Rotarians in the peril we face of nuclear extinction on the planet through the use of nuclear weapons, and gain support of Rotary International for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and to work for its implementation as Rotary has done for the elimination of polio.   She monitors the signature campaign at https://rotarians.peacinstitute.org/endnukesnow  

Ann is a graduate of the University of Michigan (BA, French, and Masters of Social Work); and Michigan State University (Ph.D. in Human Ecology).  She has one daughter and two grandchildren.
