Meeting Guests vs Potential Members
Ann Fitch
We love having our Members bring guests to meetings. If you have a friend or colleague that is interested in one of our programs, please bring them without hesitation! If you have someone that you would like to propose for Membership, that is a little different procedure. Our Club is going to get back to the practice of letting the Rotarians object or approve a potential member. For those of you that are newer, historically, the Club gets an email with the name of the person that is being recommended for membership and each member gets to object (in writing) or give no response for approval. It has been about two years since we have actually practiced this.
If you have someone that you would like to bring to a meeting with the purpose of asking them to join, please submit that name to Penny Vought, the Membership Chair, prior to inviting them to the meeting. This will give our membership the opportunity to object or approve. We are doing this early on in the courtship, because we do not want individuals to come to a meeting with the hopes of joining, get excited to be a part of our Club, and THEN possibly have a member object to them. We want to avoid someone saying, "Rotary didn't want me." That is simply not a lens that we want to be seen through.
You may wonder, "why would any member object to someone joining?" There are a number of reasons, it may be a question of integrity, safety, or any other reason. We trust that our Members would not use trivial differences as a reason to object. Please reach out to me if you have any questions on this, I am happy to clarify or expound.
