Wear Rotary Out
Ann Fitch
member photo
Recently I have become a judge for junior and senior high school speech competitions. I carry my laptop in my Rotary bag and always wear my Rotary fleece vest or some sort of Rotary logo gear to these events. I'm not there on Rotary's behalf, I just think it's important to get the Wheel of Excellence (that's the name of our golden logo) in front of people as much as possible. Splashing our brand and logo in front of people is an effective part of enhancing our public image. We certainly do not have a bad public image, but there may be a lack of awareness of our existence in our own community. Of course WE know we exist, we're us! But does the majority of our community know that we are here or even what we do? If we are not willing to tell them, they will never know.

I think my speech judging clothing choices are working, at the last competition I heard a student in the hall ask another student, "did you have the Rotary judge yet? She gave good feedback." I encourage you to get a t-shirt or two and wear it proudly around Waseca and beyond. . .only good things can come from it.

Unarmed Civilian Protectors
Unarmed Civilian Protectors

Dr. Ann Frisch served as a trained, unarmed civilian protector (UCP)

in Guatemala when Nonviolent Peaceforce sent a team to protect threatened women human rights defenders during the national elections in 2007.  Currently she serves the organization as Senior Adviser.  She is co-author and certified trainer for the first e-learning curriculum for Unarmed Civilian Peacekeepers in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The manual is available free of charge at https://nonviolentpeaceforce.org//wp-content/uploads/2022/04/2021_Course_Manual___Full.pdf See other resources at https://nonviolentpeaceforce.org/quick-resources/

In 2017, she was named Rotary International Peace Champion in Geneva Rotary UN meeting, along with 5 others,  for her work with Nonviolent Peaceforce and Rotary.   With the Khuanlang-Hatyai Rotary Club she organized the first district grant to be used in an area of armed conflict (Southern Thailand) and the first ever to train Rotarians in “educational and humanitarian” service with district grants.  In 2016, following the RI Convention in Seoul, she trained activists for reunification in the DMZ.   In May 2022, her Rotary grant to Nonviolent Peaceforce trained 40 Rotarians and Nigeria National Park Rangers (both women and men) to use the methods of unarmed civilian protectors instead of guns in dealing with local conflict on public lands.

Currently Ann is a member of the WE Rotary Club of International Peace (D5000She has worked with other Rotarians to create a Rotarians for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons, which is working to educate Rotarians in the peril we face of nuclear extinction on the planet through the use of nuclear weapons, and gain support of Rotary International for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and to work for its implementation as Rotary has done for the elimination of polio.   She monitors the signature campaign at https://rotarians.peacinstitute.org/endnukesnow

Ann is a graduate of the University of Michigan (BA, French, and Masters of Social Work); and Michigan State University (Ph.D. in Human Ecology).  She has one daughter and two grandchildren.
