Caregivers Services
Nov. 18, 2021 12:00 p.m.
In February 2013, the first meeting was held to discuss the need for services for caregivers and care recipients. A group of community leaders were present, led by a local Parish Nurse. After some discussion the decision was made to move forward. The local clinic had discontinued these services a few years earlier. VINE Faith Action in Mankato provided seed money for the year and the know-how to start “Some Time Away”, a four hour weekly respite program. The purpose of which was to give caregivers a four hour time to do other things, at the same time providing the care receiver with a safe, socially active, away from home experience. In September 2013, “Some Time Away” began and continues, located at Faith United Methodist Church with its lake view and easy parking. In July 2014, Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging (MNRAAA) gave us a grant to continue the programming until we became self-sustaining. They have continued to support us, both financially and the nuts and bolts of running an organization. We tried to come under the umbrella of other organizations that didn’t work out. The summer of 2015, we had no funding but persevered with volunteers. In the fall, we received a grant from (MNRAAA) to continue on. At present our funding is from the Department of Human Services and the participants in our expanded services. We have a dedicated Board of Directors. In June 2016, we received our non-profit status with the State of Minnesota and the Federal Government. Although funding has been challenging, we continue to provide an expanding program base. Waseca needs a place to meet the needs of caregivers and care receivers. And, we Are That Place. Waseca Area Caregiver Services. |

Professional Burnout
Jan. 20, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) is working to create healthier communities across Minnesota by expanding opportunities for active living, healthy eating and tobacco-free living. Good health is created where we live, work, learn and play. Schools, businesses, apartment owners/managers, farmers, community groups, senior organizations, hospitals, clinics, planning entities, Chambers of Commerce, faith communities and many more partners are creating better health together through SHIP all across Minnesota. I have lived in Waseca for 8 years, my husband is born and raised Waseca and that is the reason I ended up here when we moved back from Chicago, where we met. We now have a 2.5 year old boy, along with a 15 week old black lab puppy and a cat that doesn’t approve of the puppy. I grew up in Edina and I have a Bachelors of Arts from Saint Thomas University in Psychology with a minor in Japanese. Prior to this, I worked for 6 years at South Country Health Alliance doing mental health and elderly waiver services in their Health Services Department. After doing the same thing every day, I decided it was time for a change. I have now been in my role as the SHIP Community Health Coordinator with Le Sueur – Waseca Community Health Board for six months and I love being able to do the work I’m doing now. Currently, I am working with our schools to bring more wellness practices to the staff and students, do an educational presentation on tobacco and vaping and expanding the school’s garden to make it wheelchair accessible. Within the community, I am working to establish a Men’s Shed program for our retired/semi-retired gentlemen, establish a new community garden, expand the reach of our local food shelves with services they can provide, revamping workplace wellness to help with retaining employees as well as drawing new employees to apply. I am also working to establish a farm to childcare program to bring more gardens to our childcare centers to provide more fresh vegetables to the kids. There is also a community childcare project in the works that I am very excited about. I enjoy being busy and I am looking forward to seeing these projects come to fruition, as well as, any new projects that will come my way in the future. |

Microagressions and Minnesota Nice
Feb. 17, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Destiny is the founder of B.E.A.M.
I founded B.E.A.M.- Black Excellence Around Minnesota, in 2018 after noticing that there was a lack of racial equity in my community, especially in the education being provided to youth. B.E.AM is a multifaceted business that specializes in racial equity, strategic planning, and education. My goal is to help you become more knowledgeable and successful in Racial Equity.
"I am determined to eliminate racism, educate and motivate people, businesses, schools, and families one day at a time. I know that change matters and I believe success happens here." Destiny will be speaking on Microagressions and how that translate into Minnesota Nice.
